INFORMATION FOR PERSONS INTERESTED IN BEING A CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR OR CITY COUNCILOR FOR THE CITY OF ROSEBURG

 IN THE NOVEMBER 4, 2014 GENERAL ELECTION

Forms and instructions for filing as a City candidate in the 2014 General Election may be obtained from the City Recorder’s Office on the third floor of City Hall at 900 SE Douglas in Roseburg, beginning Wednesday, June 4, 2014.  The last day to file as a candidate will be Tuesday, August 26, 2014.    For the 2014 General Election, there will be vacancies in the following City offices, with terms as identified below:

            

Mayor: Two Year Term
   
City Council:  
Ward One Position 1 - Four Year Term
  Position 2 - Two Year Term
   
Ward Two Position 1 - Four Year Term
   
Ward Three Position 1 - Four Year Term
  Position 2 - Two Year Term
   
Ward Four Position 1 - Four Year Term
  Position 2 - Two Year Term


The Mayor’s position will be for a two year term expiring 12/31/2016.  Council Position 1 in each of the four Wards will be for a full four year term expiring December 31, 2018.  Council Position 2, in Wards One, Three and Four will only be for a two year term to fulfill the remaining term of persons previously vacating those positions.

The positions of Mayor and City Councilor for the City of Roseburg are non-partisan positions supported by Petitions of Nomination.  In order to be placed on the ballot as a candidate, you must obtain signatures from a certain number of registered voters who support your nomination.  For the office of Mayor, nomination petitions must be signed by not less than 50 registered voters of the City.  For the office of City Councilor, nomination petitions must be signed by at least twenty registered voters who reside in the same ward in which you live.   If you are unfamiliar with the City Ward boundaries, the City Recorder will assist you in determining which ward you live in.

 Qualifications for Candidates

To qualify as a candidate for Mayor or City Councilor of the City ofRoseburg, you must be:

1.    a legal elector under the laws and constitution of the  state of Oregon and a registered voter of the City of Roseburg; and

2.   a resident of the City ofRoseburg for one year immediately before being elected to the office you are seeking. **

**If running for City Councilor, you must also be a resident of the ward you seek to represent when you file for candidacy and if elected, you must remain a resident of the ward throughout your term of office.  You may not seek candidacy in more than one City of Roseburg elective office.

If you are interested in filing for one of the vacant positions, please call the City’s Administration Office at 541/492-6866 to schedule an appointment with City Recorder Sheila Cox; she’ll be happy to explain the process and help you get started on the necessary paperwork.  City Hall office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to noon, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
