ROSEBURG, Ore. – Artists of all ages and abilities are invited to register for a free “Animé Your Way” drawing workshop being offered Tuesday, June 18, through Thursday, June 20, at Roseburg Public Library.

Former “Simpsons” artist Carlos Nieto III will teach a comprehensive, step-by-step program in which participants create and modify an animé character from scratch. Animé is a type of art that originated in Japan and is often adapted from Japanese comics called “manga.”

Workshops with one class daily will be offered for children at least 9 years old, teens and adults. On the last day, the regular adult session will be changed to a class for families with at least one child aged 9 or older.

The library, located at 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd., has a large selection of manga, primarily in the junior and teen sections. Popular series include “Pokémon,“ “One Piece,” “Chainsaw Man,” and “The Promised Neverland.”

Nieto will teach three classes daily. All sessions will be free and last two hours. Participants may attend only one session.

Classes for youth ages 9 through 12 will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday, June 18; Wednesday, June 19; and Thursday, June 20. Children must be at least 9 years old on the day of the program to participate.

Classes for teens 13 through 17 will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on the same three days.

Classes for adults 18 and older will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on two days: Tuesday, June 18, and Wednesday, June 19.

A class for families with at least one child and one adult will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 20. Children must be at least 9 years old.

To register, visit the library’s website at www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org and click on “Animé Your Way Class Registration,” or stop by the library’s front desk or call 541-492-7050. Registration is first come, first served.

This project is made possible by the Roundhouse Foundation, Douglas County Cultural Coalition and Friends of the Roseburg Public Library.

In other news, this month’s Tech Time has been rescheduled to 12 to 2 p.m. on the second Thursday and Friday, May 9 and 10, because of staffing issues. Tech Time will return to 12 to 2 p.m. on the first Thursday and Friday in June and July.

During Tech Time, RARE AmeriCorps member Christian Sala provides one-on-one assistance for up to 20 minutes to help patrons feel more comfortable with smartphones or learn tips for using their laptops. For best results, folks should bring their own devices.

Help is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Spanish interpretation is available during Thursday sessions.

The library will discontinue Tech Time after July to coincide with the end of Sala’s service term.

Library staff is available to offer technology assistance at the front desk during library hours to the best of their ability and knowledge. Patrons do not need to schedule an appointment, but please note that assistance is provided on a limited, first-come, first-served basis.
