Library expands hours, offers programs

ROSEBURG, Ore. – Library patrons can now access services on Thursday evenings after Roseburg Public Library expanded its hours to remain open until 8 p.m.

The library’s hours are now Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is closed to the public Sundays and Mondays.
“The library is pleased to extend hours to provide additional opportunities for community members to access computers, connect to Wi-Fi, check out books, attend programs in person and gather in this beautiful space,” said Library Director Kris Wiley.

The library offers many free programs and events for children, youths and adults starting or resuming this month:

• “Storytime with Aurora” is now offered at the library twice a week at 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Aurora reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and ends with a craft for kids and families. On Thursday, Oct. 19, Storytime will be offered at 11:15 a.m.

• Club de Idioma Español, or Spanish Club, returns to the library at 4 p.m. on second and fourth Wednesdays starting Oct. 11. Youths from second through eighth grades can learn about Spanish language and culture with Julia Masner.

• An all-ages drop-in session building with Legos, Duplos, Magna-tiles and other objects will be offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.

• An Online Book Group for adults will meet via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. on second Tuesdays, Oct. 10; Nov. 14; Dec. 12; Jan. 9; and Feb. 13. Email kwiley@cityofroseburg.org for the Zoom link.

• An all-ages presentation, “Sea Otters on the Oregon Coast,” will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, by Elakha Alliance Coastal Community Coordinator Kyle Motley at the library in partnership with Umpqua Valley Audubon Society.

• At 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, community-builder Mark Yaconelli, author of “Between the Listening and the Telling: How Stories Can Save Us,” will present an interactive “How Stories Can Save Us” workshop at the library.

• A third Wednesdays STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Program will be offered for elementary school-aged children at 3 p.m. Oct. 18, Nov. 15, and Dec. 20.

• From 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, the library offers “Teen Drop-In Hangout” for youths and young adults aged 13 to 18. Ropp invites them to the Teen Room for games, PlayStation, crafts, virtual reality, a trading card game called Magic: The Gathering, and snacks.

• Free basic skills classes for computers, Zoom and mobile phones will be offered throughout fall for all patrons. No library card is required, but registration is at library@cityofroseburg.org or 541-492-7052. Computer basics will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, and Friday, Nov. 3; and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7. Computer Basics for parents/caregivers needing childcare for kids 4 to 12 years old will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, and 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21. Computer Basics classes in Spanish will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2; 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14; and 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14. Zoom videoconferencing basics will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17; Friday, Nov. 10; and Tuesday, Dec. 19. Android phone basics will be at 10:30 a.m. Fridays, Oct. 20 and Nov. 17, or at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, for parents/caregivers needing childcare for kids aged 4 to 12. An iPhone and iPad basics class will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27 and Dec. 15. Participants must bring their own Android phone, iPhone or iPad.

• A Silent Book Group for adults meets at the library at 6:30 p.m. on last Thursdays, Oct. 26; Nov. 30; Dec. 28; Jan. 25; and Feb. 29.
