Volunteer FAQs

Are there opportunities for youth under 18 years old to volunteer with the City?

The Parks & Recreation Department does not allow youth ages 13 and older to volunteer unless as part of youth groups, school groups, or as part of an organization hosted volunteer event, provided that a parent or legal guardian signs the Volunteer Application and Liability Release Form. All minors must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult at a ratio of 1 adult for every 5 youth (1:10 for teachers/students) during their volunteer hours.

The Roseburg Public Library allows youth ages 13 and older to become volunteers, provided that a parent or legal guardian signs the Teen Volunteer Service Application. 18 year olds who are still attending high school should complete an Adult Volunteer Policy Application and note that they are in high school.

I have a school/youth group that would like to volunteer, is that possible?

School/Youth Groups are allowed to volunteer with the Parks & Recreation Department provided that all youth are 13 years old or older and a parent or legal guardian signs the Volunteer Application and Liability Release Form. Parks & Recreation volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult at a ratio of 1 adult for every 5 youth (1:10 for teachers/students) during their volunteer hours.

School/Youth Groups that would like to volunteer with the Roseburg Public Library are encouraged to contact the library directly to discuss opportunities at (541) 492-7050 or library@roseburgor.gov.

Can I complete my court ordered community service with the City?

No, we do not allow court-ordered service hours to be fulfilled by volunteering with the City.

What days and times can I volunteer with the City?

The Parks & Recreation Department accepts Individual Volunteers Mondays - Fridays from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. If you are planning a group volunteer project, a weekend event must be arranged in advance with City staff.

The Roseburg Public Library requires adult volunteers to commit to a two-hour shift every week. Youth ages 13 and up are allowed to sign up for one (1) two-hour shift, once per month.

What are typical tasks when volunteering with the City?

Typical Parks and Recreation volunteer tasks could include pulling weeds, spreading bark mulch with a rake or hoe, removing litter from walking paths with litter pickers, planning seasonal plants, and other tasks as they relate to landscaping and beautifying our parks.

Typical adult Library volunteer tasks could include shelving materials and assisting with programs, such as the Harry Potter Day event. Typical youth volunteer tasks could include compiling craft kits, scanning barcodes, adding or removing stickers from books, and folding/cutting paper.

If either of these do not sound like a good fit for you, check out the other volunteer opportunities the City has to offer HERE.

How do I get started?

Volunteers should start by reading the Volunteer Program Manual, then submit a Volunteer Inquiry Form.
